Where Christian names come from

Christian naming has never been a single tradition. It is three overlapping layers, and most of the names on this page belong to one of them. The oldest layer is Hebrew: names carried over from the Old Testament — Noah, Elijah, Samuel, Miriam, Rebecca — which Christian families share with Jewish ones, usually in a Greek- or Latin-filtered spelling. The second layer is New Testament Greek and Latin: Peter, Andrew, Timothy, Phoebe, Paul. The third is post-biblical: saints, virtues and church-era coinages such as Faith, Christian, Verity and Evangeline.

The Reformation reshaped English naming more than any other single event. Before it, English children were named largely for saints, with a small pool of names doing enormous work — a medieval village might hold five Johns and four Williams. Protestant families deliberately moved toward Old Testament names and abstract virtues, which is how Hope, Mercy, Charity and Prudence entered the language as given names. Many of those did not survive the 19th century, but Faith, Grace and Hope did, and Selah and Verity have returned in the last two decades.

A recurring question is whether a name has to appear in scripture to be a Christian name. It does not. Christopher, Theodore and Gabriella are all Christian names built from Greek roots rather than lifted from a verse, and saints' names such as Sebastian and Lucia sit fully inside the tradition without a biblical appearance.

If you are choosing within this tradition, it helps to know which register you want. Prophet names (Ezekiel, Elijah, Isaiah) read as weighty and have been the fastest-rising group in the US since the 2000s. Apostle names (James, John, Peter, Andrew) read as steady and unremarkable in the best sense. Virtue names read as devotional and are strongest today in the American South and across English-speaking Africa.
