The Hukamnama and Sikh naming

Sikh naming works differently from almost every other tradition on this site, because the first letter is not chosen by the parents. The family brings the child to the gurdwara, the Guru Granth Sahib is opened at random, and the first letter of the first word of the hymn on that page — the Hukamnama — becomes the letter the child's name must start with. Parents then choose a name beginning with that letter, and it is announced to the congregation.

The names themselves are usually compounds, and once you can see the parts they become easy to read. Gur- refers to the Guru; Har- is a name for God; -preet means love; -leen means absorbed in; -deep and -noor mean lamp and light; -jot is divine light. So Gurpreet is love of the Guru, Harpreet is love of God, Gurleen is one absorbed in the Guru, and Prabhjot is God's light. Most of these compounds are formally unisex, though usage has drifted — Simran and Gurleen lean female in practice, Harpreet and Gurpreet remain evenly split.

Two further elements often follow the given name. Singh ('lion') and Kaur ('princess') were instituted by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699 for men and women respectively, in part to break the link between surname and caste. Many Sikh families use them as middle names alongside a family surname; others use them as the surname itself.

Punjabi naming also has a strong sound logic. Names in this tradition tend to end in stressed, open syllables and carry easily across a crowded room — a practical quality parents notice. And because the vocabulary is devotional rather than descriptive, nearly every name on this page is, quite literally, a statement of faith rather than a description of the child.
