Muslim Baby Names 2026

Names rooted in Islam — Quranic, Arabic, Persian and Turkish picks like Ayaan, Maryam, Idris and Layla, each with meaning, origin and pronunciation.

How Muslim families choose a name

Naming in Islam is treated as a responsibility rather than a preference. The traditional practice is to name a child on the seventh day, alongside the aqiqah, and there is a well-known hadith encouraging parents to choose names with good meaning — which is why meaning tends to be the first question a Muslim family asks about a name, not the last.

Most of the names on this page come from one of four language streams. Classical Arabic supplies the largest group: Qur'anic names (Maryam, Yusuf, Ibrahim), names of the Prophet's companions (Bilal, Zayd, Hamza), and descriptive names built from Arabic roots such as karim (generous), nur (light) or salam (peace). Persian contributes softer, more lyrical names — Yasmin, Arman, Reza — which spread through Iran, Afghanistan and Mughal India. Turkish names such as Emre, Esra and Kerem often carry no Arabic root at all and belong to an Anatolian tradition of their own. And in Southeast Asia, Malay and Indonesian families adapt Arabic names to local spelling: Iskandar, Ridwan, Liyana.

One convention worth understanding is the compound name. Abd- names (Abdullah, Abdulrahman) mean 'servant of' one of the names of God and are meant to be used whole rather than shortened. Similarly, names like Zain al-Abidin or Nur al-Din are phrases, not first-and-middle pairs. If you are drawn to part of a compound, families commonly use the standalone element — Zain, Noor — which is entirely acceptable.

Practical advice from parents in the diaspora: say the name out loud in the accent of the country you live in as well as the one you come from. Names such as Sami, Adam, Layla and Yara pass easily between Arabic and English; others carry sounds (the initial kh, the ayn) that English speakers approximate. Neither is wrong — it is only worth deciding in advance which version your child will hear at school.
