Catholic Baby Names 2026

Catholic baby names drawn from saints, Latin and Spanish tradition — Lucia ('light'), Xavier ('new house'), Maria, Sebastian and many more.

Saints, feast days and Catholic naming

Catholic naming is organised around saints, and for most of church history that was close to a rule. Canon law once directed that children be given a Christian name, and in practice that meant the name of a saint who could serve as the child's patron — someone to be named for, prayed to, and celebrated with each year. The current Code of Canon Law is gentler: it asks only that the name not be foreign to Christian sensibility. But the saint tradition remains the living centre of Catholic naming.

That produces two customs worth knowing. The first is the name day, or onomastico — in Italy, Spain, Poland, Portugal and much of Latin America, the feast day of your patron saint is celebrated alongside, and sometimes instead of, your birthday. The second is naming for a Marian title rather than for Mary directly: Guadalupe, Lourdes, Carmen, Pilar and Rosario are all references to apparitions or devotions, which is why they can sound like place names — because several of them are.

The Spanish- and Portuguese-language names on this page carry a further layer of history. Diego and Santiago both descend from Saint James, patron of Spain, split apart by centuries of pronunciation. Javier comes from Saint Francis Xavier, and the Xavier element is a Basque place name meaning 'new house'. Sebastian, Lucia, Rafael and Catalina each trace to a specific saint with a specific feast in the calendar.

If you would like a name with a patron behind it, one practical approach is to work from the calendar rather than a list: look up the saints commemorated near your due date, read what is actually known about them, and see whether the story fits the child you are expecting. Many families find a name that way that they would never have reached through an alphabetical list.
